人物经历
美国作曲家。生于美国北方宾夕法尼亚州的匹兹堡。父亲是一位社会活动家，喜欢音乐，业余拉小提琴。他是第五个儿子，大家都疼爱地叫他“小史蒂芬”。他爱好音乐，6岁时，在帽子上插根羽毛，打着鼓，吹着《莹之光》（即《友谊地久天长》）的口哨，模仿军乐队队员在路上走。7岁时，母亲带他到乐器店，他随手拿起一支银笛，稍微摆弄一会儿，便吹起了《哥伦比亚之歌》，而且吹得很出色，使在场的人都大为惊奇。他没有跟任何人学过音乐，只不过他唱过或吟诵过许多诗歌。不知他从哪借来一本音乐书，每天爱不释手地用心读。十四岁，他考入中学，他越来越喜爱音乐，经常与好朋友一起重唱或重奏。并为四支长笛写过一首圆舞曲，大家一同演奏。1841年，他考入大学，开始作曲，1842年，他16岁时出版了歌曲《爱人啊，请打开格窗》。后在匹兹堡的棉花仓库担任工作，接触了黑人演唱的歌曲，对他后来的创作产生重要的影响。一生他写了近200多首美丽动人的歌曲，其中有160余首已出版，而且几乎全是自己创作歌词。如：《噢苏珊娜》(Oh Susanna)、《尼德叔叔》、《故乡的亲人》(Old Folks at Home)、《我的肯塔基故乡》、《金发的珍妮》(Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair)、《美丽的梦中人》、《老黑奴》(Old Black Joe)等。1864年1月13日病逝于纽约，年仅37岁。
