《I Knew You Were Trouble.》的歌词由泰勒·斯威夫特个人写作，马克斯·马丁、希尔贝克负责歌曲的音乐制作 。2012年12月，泰勒·斯威夫特在接受MTV新闻网采访时表示，《I Knew You Were Trouble.》讲述的是一个好女孩在认识一个坏男孩之后，开始逐渐迷失自己、随后被坏男孩抛弃的故事 。
2013年3月，泰勒·斯威夫特在接受《Sunday Times》杂志采访时，透露了这首歌是写给哈里·斯泰尔斯（英国男子组合One Direction成员）的 。虽然泰勒和哈里·斯泰尔斯恋情的公开晚于所属录音室专辑《Red》发行的前1个月 ，但他们曾在2012年3月有过短暂的地下恋情，分手后泰勒便写下了这首歌曲。
