艾薇塔最初在1976年是以专辑的形式发行的，主唱者是Julie Covington。其他还有保罗琼斯（Paul Jones，饰演胡安·裴隆），芭芭拉狄克森（Barbara Dickson，饰演 the mistress），柯姆威金森（Colm Wilkinson，饰演 Che，叙述者）以及托尼克利斯蒂（Tony Christie，饰演 Agustin Magaldi）。Julie Covington 的《阿根廷，别为我哭泣》在1977年2月于英国发行时达到了音乐排行榜的第一名，同时在世界各地的发行也都非常成功。芭芭拉狄克森的《Another Suitcase in Another Hall》同样也非常的成功。在英国、澳大利亚、南非、南美洲、以及众多的欧洲国家，艾薇塔的销售情形都超过了《万世巨星》。不过这张专辑在美国则没有达到同样的成绩。
1978年6月21日，音乐剧《艾薇塔》第一次在伦敦的爱德华王子剧院 (Prince Edward Theatre) 公演。这一次，是由Elaine Paige扮演艾娃佩隆， David Essex 扮演彻，Ross Ackland 扮演胡安佩隆。《艾薇塔》获得了很多奖项，包括比较重要的伦敦西头剧院奖 (1978年度最佳音乐剧，还有 Elaine Paige 拿到最佳音乐剧演员奖)。第二年的5月8日，美国的《艾薇塔》也在洛杉矶的 Dorothy Chandler 帐篷剧场开演了，由 Patti LuPone 扮演艾娃佩隆， Mandy Patinkin 扮演彻，Bob Gunton 扮演胡安佩隆。公演了九个星期后，该剧搬到三藩市的奥菲姆剧院(Orpheum Theatre) 演出了7个星期，然后，就直接进军纽约的百老汇了。在纽约，原来伦敦剧团的剧组人马都汇集在一起，使《艾薇塔》在百老汇一炮而红，它不仅获得了当年百老汇上音乐剧界的大量奖项，之后了几年里，《艾薇塔》一直是百老汇常驻剧目，而许多巡回演出剧团也把《艾薇塔》带到了全球各地。
