创作背景
巴尔的摩市东南的麦克亨利堡，建在一个小半岛上，是个平面成五角星状的要塞，扼进港要道。第二次美英战争期间作为前哨阵地抗击英军。1814年，英国舰队直扑麦克亨利堡，昼夜连续猛轰此堡。当时，有一位名叫弗朗西斯·斯科特·基的美国律师乘船到英舰交涉释放被扣留的美国平民。他目击了英军炮轰麦克亨利堡及美军英勇抵抗的惨烈场面，忧心如焚。1814年9月13日凌晨，弗朗西斯·斯科特·基透过炮火的硝烟，看到一面美国国旗仍然在城堡上迎风飘扬，他被这景像深深感动，随手在一封信的背后写下了几行诗。后来，他把诗稿送给法官尼科尔逊（Nicholson），得到大力赞赏，并建议用一首当时非常流行的曲子John Stafford Smith作曲的“To Anacreon in Heaven”做为配曲，同时取歌名为“星条旗之歌”（The Star Spangled Banner），这首歌深受美国人民的喜爱，很快就传遍全国。
1931年，美国国会正式将《星条旗之歌》定为美利坚合众国的国歌。如今，巴尔的摩市的麦克亨利堡已被辟为国家纪念地和历史圣地。1985年11月7日，巴尔的摩市与中国福建省厦门市结为友好城市。

That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion.
A home and a country should leave us no more，

From the terror of flight and the gloom of the grave.
