一个因犯了错误被判刑三年的美国犯人，在临出狱前夕，给妻子写了封信，信中表达了自己因没有尽到作为丈夫、作为父亲的责任而感到深深的悔与歉意，在满心期待能回家，家庭能重新他的同时，又自认为犯了错，没有资格要求家庭接纳他，因此，他极度的期盼知道，如果妻子依然爱他，仍在等他回家，那么就在村口的老橡树上系上一条黄丝带；如果他在树上看不见黄丝带，他也明白妻子的心意，他将继续乘车远去。 在从佛罗里达州至迈阿密的长途汽车上，他心里一直忐忑不安，既期待又怕受到伤害。当车子接近迈阿密市镇广场的时候，他甚至不敢睁开眼睛，恳求司机和车厢里的人帮忙看老橡树上是否系着黄丝带。当他听到车上所有乘客的欢呼声时，他睁开了眼睛，看到在村口老橡树上，数百条黄丝带正迎风飘舞……。他的妻子，带着儿子、女儿和全村的人都在老橡树那里等待着他的归来。车上的、家里的、村里的所有人都在拍手，在欢呼声中，他们一家人紧紧地拥抱在一起。 长途汽车司机被这个感人的场面深深地感动了，当即将这个故事用村口的电话通知了当地的媒体，几乎在同时，这个感人的故事就被传播到了美国全国各地。国内当时就引起了很大的轰动，时至今天，这个真实的、感人的故事仍在继续流传。
