歌曲背景

这部清唱剧与卡洛登战役（1746年4月6日，查理·爱德华率领的苏格兰詹姆斯党人在此迎击由坎伯兰公爵威廉·奥古斯塔斯统率的英格兰军，这场著名战役仅仅持续了40分钟即以苏格兰军的惨败而告终，英军以极微小的代价便重创敌军：5000名苏格兰士兵阵亡1000，其余大半被俘或受伤；9000名英格兰士兵却仅损失了50人）有关，是站在英格兰人的角度为庆祝坎伯兰公爵威廉王子（Prince William Augustus）的胜利而作，1747年在伦敦科文特花园首演。
歌曲前段只有女声，表现的是英雄归来前胜利的消息传来时妇女儿童相互转告，簇拥在街道，兴奋不已的场景；后加入男声，气势骤起，表现出英雄得胜归来的雄壮威武，万众颂扬，酣畅热闹的场面。
有趣的是，后来在19世纪的英国，每开辟一条铁路和一个火车站，都会请铜管乐队奏响此曲以资庆贺。
