《Back to December》的歌词和简谱由泰勒·斯威夫特独自完成，内森·查普曼负责参与音乐制作。泰勒·斯威夫特在接受美国《人物》采访时表示，《Back to December》献给一位他理应得到更多的男士，他们两个人之间曾经有过一段完美的关系，可惜自己当时并没有用心对他，因此这是一首道歉形式的歌曲。
